Hip + Urban Mom: What Is A Doula?

$

0
When I was pregnant with my first child, my husband and I decided to go to the baby show. While we were there we learned a little bit about something we had never heard of before - a doula.

Fortunately, my cousin Jackie Streich is not only a doula but is also a doctor of naturopathic medicine and took time out of her wedding planning to teach me more about field.

She says that, “The role of a doula is to provide physical, emotional, and informational support to women and their partners during labour and childbirth.” What that entails is, “help and advice on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation techniques, movement, and positioning” and she stresses that, “the most crucial role for doulas is to provide continuous emotional reassurance and comfort to the labouring mother”.

I asked Jackie what the benefits of using a doula were and she told me that studies have shown that when doulas attend births, labours are shorter with fewer complications or need for intervention, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily. Women also report greater satisfaction with their birth experience and have less postpartum depression.

Jackie told me that you should meet with a doula, “Once or twice prior to the due date. These meetings are an opportunity for the doula to get to know the parents, work on developing a birth plan as well as to teach and practice some comfort measures. The prenatal meetings are also a great time to address any concerns or fears the mother may have about the birthing process”.

Jackie said that in order to find a doula you can ask your OB or midwife for a referral or search by location on websites for doula organizations such as DONA, CAPPA, or Doula Care. She said that, “When selecting a doula it is important to meet or speak to a few different doulas to help you find a good fit” because it’s obviously important to find a doula that you are comfortable with. “Common interview questions might include getting an understanding of the doulas previous birth experience, what types of comfort measures are used, the on-call period, what the package of services includes for the fee…etc”.

A little more about Dr. Jackie - she is, "Both a naturopathic doctor and doula and is the Vice President for the Association of Perinatal Naturopathic Doctors. Due to the broad scope of practice of a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Streich is able to provide support before, during and after the birth to help the mother prepare herself both physically and mentally for the birth and have a more positive birth experience overall”. As a naturopathic doctor and doula she is able to use acupuncture/acupressure, homeopathy, herbal medicine, and massage techniques to help women cope with labour.

An Urban Retreat @ Hammam Spa, Toronto

Hammam Spa recently invited me to experience their Turkish Bath and Spa in Toronto. It was my second visit in a very long time and I was just as impressed that this subterranean urban retreat existed along the hustle of King Street West. Opened in 2005, the spa boasts 8,000 square feet of day spa bliss and a 500 square foot steam room that is infused with essential oils.
Turkish baths are traditional steam-filled grottos. The one inside Hammam Spa is particularly dark and of course, steamy. The steam room is co-ed, so I recommend bringing a bathing suit so you feel more comfortable or use the wrap provided in your locker.
So Why Steam?Steaming is supposed to open your pores and release toxins from your skin, while loosening dead skin cells. I always leave relaxed and my skin is glowing after I spend an afternoon in the steam room. The steam will also relax your joints and muscles - my shoulders are a wreck. I spend all day sitting at my desk staring at a computer screen. I find that hanging in the steam room before a massage usually helps me unplug and unwind. Iced towels and cold water are available to help you cool down between sessions.

I paired my visit with a 60-Minute Argan Oil Massage ($155) which was unscented and natural, leaving my skin quite soft and shiny when I left. My registered massage therapist worked out all my kinks while I mellowed out on the table and eventually fell into a deep sleep. If you have access to massage benefits, you can use them here and claim the amount back from your employee health insurance - so make sure to ask for a formal RMT receipt when you leave. After my massage I spent some time reflecting in the Tea Lounge, reading magazines and hydrating as much as possible while nibbling on snacks.
In addition to massage therapy Hammam Spa also offers facials, scrubs, wraps, waxing, manicures and pedicures. Use of the steam room is complimentary with any treatment of $100 or more OR you can choose a single visit for $55. We loved it here and definitely see ourselves coming back.

Are You A Night Eater?

$

We all look forward to that evening snack, don't we? How else can we wind down from a long busy day than in front of the tube watching our favourite show while munching on our most favourite snack food?

We earned it right!?

If this sounds like you, you may have NES.

NES - Night Eating Syndrome is the latest eating disorder to be added to the list. You probably know someone with NES (it's estimated to happen in 1.5% of the general population and even higher rates are found in the overweight population). If you show symptoms of NES it will make weight loss efforts very very difficult.

You may have NES if you:

• Eat at least 25% of your food for the day after your evening meal or more than 50% of your daily calories after 7pm

• Wake up in the middle of the night to eat (and CAN remember that you did this - some people eat while sleepwalking and can't remember it the next morning - that's a different syndrome, doh!)

• Have "morning anorexia" aka a lack of desire to eat in the morning and/or skipping breakfast four or more mornings per week (obviously if you are eating tons at night you won't wake up hungry - people often fail to make this connection though)

• Have a strong urge to eat between dinner and sleep and/or during the night

• Feel that you have to eat to help you fall asleep

Being aware that you have NES is the first step, then you can try and make realistic changes to help cut back on night-time eating (like making sure you eat enough during the day so you aren't raiding the cupboards at night famished).

Here are some general evening snacking guidelines:

- Try to avoid eating within one hour of bedtime (gotta give yourself time to digest after all!)

- If you eat your dinner four or more hours before bedtime, you may need an evening snack, that’s ok - your supposed to be eating every three to five hours

- There is no “magic” time when you should stop eating – follow your hunger signals

- If you feel hungry but just had a snack or supper, have a glass of water first and reassess your hunger level in 10 minutes (we often confuse hunger with thirst!)

- If eating an evening snack, choose something low in sugar and fat (i.e. fruit and yogurt, slice toast with pb, small bowl of cereal)

Wonderfully Weird Things To Do In Thailand

$
0

I'm back from three glorious weeks in Thailand! My daily agenda looked something like this... eat, shop, eat, tan, get massaged, eat some more, explore and repeat. Last week I shared my list of things to do if you've only got 72 hours in Bangkok but if you have more time, here's the real deal, the less touristy, off-the-beaten path checklist to take down.

Get a massage. Every day!

For $8 CAD you can get a 60 mins foot massage, $17 gets you a one hour soothing full body massage with aloe vera and if you throw in an extra $7 you can enjoy a 30 mins scalp massage with aromatherapy hot oils. Recommendations: Koh Samui (hour and half by plane from Bangkok) is known for their top spas and THE place to go if you want to truly relax and recharge. I spent many hours at Hi Class Massage and D's Spa at Chaweng Beach (forgive the cheesy names but they were clean and the nicest places I found on the island).

Would you try a Fish Spa?

This is banned in North America for sanitary reasons but if you dare to try something totally different and can bear with the tickle factor, soak your feet in a tub of nibble fishies. They promise to chew away at rough heels and clean off the dead skin. Interesting, but I passed on this one.

Watch a Cabaret Show:

Not sure what's more entertaining, the song and dance itself or the fact that the performers are slim, beautiful men who call themselves "Lady Boys"! Just walk through any touristy area at night and someone will hand you a flyer advertising these Cabaret Shows. Some offer free admission with a drink purchase while others charge $15/person. Some shows also have themes like Calypso, Mambo, etc. but all will keep you guessing and more!

Sample real street meat:

Forgot the dainty sausage and hot dog carts in TO, this is the real thing when it comes to street meat. Stalls are setup on main streets and for a pocketful of change, you can pretty much fill your tummy with tasty desserts, curry squid tentacles, salty fish and other more daring edibles. Check out this guy's chicks!

Eat and drink out of a plastic bag:

It's common when you order takeout like rice and soup to get your food to go in one of these clear baggies. They even put drinks like iced tea, coffee and Coca-Cola in them and serve it with ice and a straw!

Booze like a local:

If you need a boost of liquid courage at the karaoke bar or want to dance the night away, order some Sangsom (rum distilled from sugarcane) with Red Bull. It is served in a bucket for $4. Remember The Hangover 2? Yup, just don't plan anything the next day except beach time.

Party like a rock star:

There are some fancy schmany clubs in Bangkok but the real shenanigans goes down at the local dive bars in northern Chiang Mai and islands known for partying such as Koh Samui and Koh Phangan <-- home of the world famous Full Moon Party. Even if you have to let astrology dictate your travel schedule, it's worth it just to experience this one night of debauchery!

Explore Khao San Road:

Even if you are not 23 and Aussie, drop by Khao San Road in Bangkok. It has become more commercialized over the years but the friendly backpackers' vibe is still there. Shops, bars and restaurants are opened till the wee hours and you can make friends with foreigners at every turn. Street vendors sell everything including fake university diplomas and ID's for press passes and employment badges for Microsoft and Lufthansa!

Get Suited:

Your office is the last thing on your mind when you are thousands of miles away but don't miss the opportunity to get a quality made-to-measure suit (for $100) and a few blouses ($35) or ties for your hip + urban guy ($10). If you are visiting for 5 days or more, check out the custom tailor shops around Pratunam Market in Bangkok or Chaweng in Koh Samui.

Caught red-handed in Patpong:

This is Bangkok's infamous red light district. With that said, there is more to offer than go-go bars and ummmm ping pong shows as you can find some great street cafes and an outdoor shopping market here. If you do check out the adult entertainment, there is no cover charge but you are expected to buy a drink. Unlike strip clubs in North America, it's not awkward going in there at all - even if you are female. The girls (on stage and bartenders) speak English and are super friendly.

Get grossed out at the Museum of Death:

If you are into the wacky and weird, visit Bangkok's Siriraj Medical Museum where you will see dissected human innards, oddities, forensic specimens and things to turn your tummy upside down. Admission is free and I assure you it will be a very educational afternoon but just go after you have lunch.

Get hissed at by snakes:

This is not your local petting zoo. Odd but highly entertaining, go check out the Snake Farm in Bangkok (located in the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute) for $2. You can gawk at these slithering creatures, see them do tricks and learn about anti-venom treatments.

Go to prison:

I took a few criminology courses at university and have always been fascinated with prisons especially ones in developing countries. Unfortunately time ran out (no pun intended) so I didn't get to drop by the Bang Kwang Central Prison. The inmates are mostly drug offenders and it's possible to visit them but you will need permission from the prisoner's embassy first.

Been to Thailand recently? What other wonderfully weird things did you see or do?

Queen West Welcomes TSOQ

What happens when a fashion buyer and clothing designer pair up to open their own boutique? Well... as you might guess, it's one haute lil' shop. Toronto fashion designer, Angela Phung, and native British Columbian fashion buyer turned Torontonian, Valentina, joined forces to do just that. The ladies opened the doors to TSOQ: The Store On Queen last Friday and I'm pretty sure the neighbourhood will never be the same.
Both ladies are unapologetically irreverent in their fashion choices and completely individual, unless they're dressed in samesies to show just how versatile their pieces really are. They've infused their eclectic style and love of affordable fashion into the merchandise that adorns the racks, making a fabulous addition to the Queen West strip.

A tiny taste of what in at TSOQ both priced at $55.
Accessories at TSOQ
Visit TSOQ, 719 Queen Street West between Bathurst and Tecumseh, to shop unique clothing and accessories with a west coast vibe, most priced well under $100. Keep in mind that TSOQ only orders really small quantities of each style to maintain exclusivity and brings in new stock regularly. If you find something you love, scoop it up and stop by regularly to see what's new.

The hug Tea Tour - Ritz Carlton, Toronto

We have been traipsing all over Toronto for a taste of high tea inside some of the best hotels in the city on The hug Tea Tour. Leaving no sandwich unturned or warm scone uneaten, we have sampled our way through the city. We were thrilled to find out that The Ritz Carlton, Toronto had recently begun serving afternoon tea - so we booked ourselves in for a visit.
My sister Amy and I decided to treat our Mom to a fancy afternoon tea and we thought what better place than the Ritz Carlton in Toronto. Tea is served in the Deq Lounge and Terrace near the back at the hotel. I wasn't aware that the Ritz was doing an afternoon tea until I got an email about it for Mother's Day. It seems like it is a regular thing and has been for the past six months or so. They will continue serving it every Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 PM, reservations are recommended. It was quite full for the Saturday before Mother's Day and Sunday itself was already fully booked. I'm sure it's a bit slower any other weekend, but because the window of time is so small - you should call ahead.
Afternoon Tea is $38 per person. Not-So-Classic Tea includes a cocktail to start for $48 per person. We chose The Sparkling Berry Bramble made with blackberries, citrus, sparkling wine and a sprig of mint (left). Our second cocktail was an ice cold Wine Spritzer (right).

The Ritz Carlton uses these pre-packaged bags, which I don't recall being loose leaf as we weren't equipped with a strainer at our table. I do enjoy the taste and experience of loose leaf tea that some of the other hotels provide. Maybe they'll change it in the future and offer an even bigger variety. They did however, have a half-filled thermidor chest for us to smell all the different teas before choosing.
The bar sent over a complimentary and refreshing cranberry spritzer to start in these very pretty stemless flutes
Warm quiche tart with a dollop of sour cream and a nice flaky crust
The assortment of savoury sandwiches (smoked salmon, cucumber, egg salad) plus a raisin scone (above). The ratio of savoury to sweet was definitely tilted towards the latter. The desserts were very well-executed but I did find myself craving a few more fancier sandwiches - but the presentation at The Ritz can't be beat. Everything arrived in a modern round little bookshelf. The sweets included a pistachio macaron, chocolate madeline, a mini red velvet cupcake, white chocolate truffle, chocolate raspberry cake and croquembouche. The pastry chef really outdid herself on this one and deserves a round of high-fives. The strategy here is take a bite out of everything because it's almost impossible to finish it all.
My husband Paul is one of four boys and brought his Mom along for an afternoon with the girls. It was mainly women at afternoon tea, but it's such a gourmet experience that guys should not feel limited from attending too(because you're just depriving yourself!).
So how did The Ritz Carlton compare to other afternoon tea spots in Toronto? Well it's the clear winner for best desserts, best cocktails, best presentation, best quiche. The King Edward Hotel still holds the prize for best scones. Red Tea Box is best for an Asian-inspired bento box tea experience. Best sandwiches go to The Royal York Hotel's Royal Tea Menu (which is an upgrade). Best loose-leaf tea selection and most innovative sushi-roll sandwiches goes to The Windsor Arms Hotel. I can't wait to see what The Four Seasons and Shangri-La come up with later this year...

The Hip + Urban Girl's Guide to NYC Street Food

I've been loving Toronto's street food scene recently: the success of events like Toronto Underground Market and Food Truck Eats; and the increase of gourmet street food vendors/trucks across the city. So, I was really excited to explore the street food community just south of the border—in New York City.
Gourmet street food vendors aren't as easy to stumble across in the Big Apple as you would think. So, do your research. Ask friends or locals where their favourite spots are. Download the Food Network's Eat St. free iPhone app. Follow a few vendors on Twitter, as their times and locations can change daily.

I was lucky enough to be in New York City during Madison Square Eats—a month long outdoor street food event in Worth Square. If you're in NYC before June 1st, it's every day, all day (11-9) and you get the opportunity to sample several eats in one location. Here's a rundown of my favourite NYC vendors who were serving up delicious gourmet street food at Mad. Sq. Eats and elsewhere across the city.
Calexico
Twitter: @CalexicoNYC
Regular Location: Food carts at Worth Square and Wooster/Prince and two restaurants in Brooklyn

Mexican cuisine with a kick. I had the chipotle pork and frijoles negros (black beans) tacos at $3/each, and these boys did not disappoint. The frijoles negros taco is one of my top two favourites from this NYC street food list.

La Sonrisa
Twitter: @La_Sonrisas
Regular Location: Food truck on Hudson Street in New Jersey and various pop-up events across NYC

A variety of empanadas, made from fresh ingredients. My friend and I shared the pulled pork and vegetarian empanadas ($3/each). The vegetarian one was excellent—light, delicious and full of flavour.
Asia Dog
Twitter: @asiadognyc
Regular Location: Small store at Kenmare/Mulberry and various pop-up events across the city

Hot dogs and burgers with Asian-inspired toppings. I had the pulled pork sandwich with Asian slaw ($6) and it's my other favourite from this street food list. The slaw really gave it that extra edge/kick.
Macaron Parlour
Twitter: @MacaronParlour
Regular Location: Various events across NYC and opening a bricks and mortar location in 2012

Macarons, need I say more? I tried the strawberry and red velvet macarons ($2.50 each). The strawberry wasn't my favourite, but the red velvet one was to-die-for. Sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Other vendors that weren't present at the Mad. Sq. Eats event, but appear to be NYC crowd pleasers:

Rickshaw Dumpling Bar - Twitter: @RickshawTruck
Wafels & Dinges - Twitter: @waffletruck
El Diablo Tacos - Twitter: @ElDiabloTacos
Inspired to head to NYC? Book your accommodations at Hotel Lola at 29th/Madison (only three blocks away from Worth Square if you want to check out Mad. Sq. Eats). Gorgeous boutique hotel with helpful staff and affordable rates if you plan on splitting the cost between yourself and a couple friends.

I'm On A {Spa} Boat. Bota Bota, Montreal

After visiting the volcanic hot springs spa, Tabacon in Costa Rica - I was sure that I would never find another spa as lovely and unique. Well lo and behold, I discover Bota Bota Spa Sur L'eau - an old ferry boat converted into a five level spa that's 'parked' on the St. Lawrence River with a view of the Old Port of Montreal. It's literally a spa in the water. So imagine the delight of sitting in a hot tub, on a boat, soaking up the sun - heaven, I know.
The concept is similar to a Scandinavian spa with steam rooms, saunas, cold plunge pools and sun decks spread throughout the boat. The view is breathtaking and well-calculated by the designers from the ad agency turned architects at Sid Lee. If you're a fan of modern design, you'll enjoy all the imagination put into this spa.
The upper sun deck with a cold plunge pool, beanbag chairs and a second hot tub in the back (above). A terrace will open in the summer with a DJ and BBQ menu from the on-site cafe. Getting to the boat requires only a simple walk from a connecting pathway. The spa provides each guest with a locker, towels and a bathrobe. Do bring your own flip-flops and a bathing suit. If you start to feel peckish, take a break inside the cafe and try one of their giant homemade zucchini muffins with a fruit salad and their signature nut mix.

One of the most unique services that Bota Bota offers is a massage choreographed to music featuring a LIVE harpist! Now how decadent is that? This Bota Bota Signature massage starts from 60 minutes/$210 for one person and a private harpist in concert or $300 for two people. Which is actually pretty reasonable when you compare it to the price of a hotel spa massage.
All of the massage therapists are RMTs - so do ask for a receipt if you can claim against your insurance. Regular massage therapy starts from $90/60 minutes and you can add-on access to the water circuit or even a yoga class for an additional charge. A day visit starts from $45 for three hours on a weekday, weekend rates are $5 more. If you visit before 11 AM, pay only $30 or show up on a Tuesday when the rates are two for $60. It's a great way to relax and enjoy Old Montreal.
In addition to massage therapy, Bota Bota also offers facial treatments, manicures, pedicures (in the Bota Chic lounge) and body scrubs. The spa launched in 2010 and has been packing in the crowds ever since.
The moody sub-level locker room makes you feel like you're in a submarine. There is a shower area to rinse-off and the spa has a hair drying station to get you all prettied up again. We definitely think this spa on a boat is a must-visit next time you're in Montreal, even if you can only squeeze in the water circuit - it's well worth it. Hip + Urban Mom: Being Spontaneous

$

0
I remember when spontaneity meant packing as many people and as much gear as we could in someone’s car and driving off for a weekend camping trip at a site that we booked an hour ago. Sometimes it meant just grabbing a coat, sending out a few texts and heading to the bar for a night of karaoke.

Being spontaneous has a new definition now that I have a child. It usually involves 30 minutes of researching a family-friendly area to go to and another 30 minutes changing and packing everything necessary.

Thankfully, my husband and I keep trying to keep the spontaneity in our lives despite the fact that it takes us an hour to get ourselves together.

Our most recent trip was on a nice sunny evening. We decided to make a quick dinner which was my homemade chicken shawarma that doesn’t take long to prepare and everyone can eat it exactly the way they want. For us that meant a tortilla wrap for our son, a pita and shawarma salad for my husband and a pita filled with lettuce, cheese and chicken for me.
After dinner we got ourselves together and headed out to Tom’s. Tom’s has been around since 1969 and kind of a staple for people who live along the Queensway. They have ice cream, which we indulged in, and even hot dogs and other food. They also have some park benches and umbrellas to enjoy your outdoor food or snack.

Afterwards we decided to burn off the ice cream calories by heading to the park just behind Tom’s. This was a VERY nice park complete with wood chips instead of sand, adult swings, kid swings and even a baby swing. There was also a path we haven’t followed yet, a baseball diamond, a tennis court and a lot of open space for running or even soccer.
We were very impressed with the rock climbing areas, rope climbing and higher slides for bigger kids and shorter slides for smaller kids. Our son especially loved the area for smaller kids because the steps were small enough for his short legs and there was a twirly thing with cogs that go round and round when you turn the knob. He spent some time sitting in the tippy lady bug and walking around the green bug. My husband even had some fun seeing how high he could climb.
When it started to get colder we decided it was time to leave. Our son had so much fun that he was upset about leaving and cried the whole way home. Even though our idea of spontaneity has changed, we still manage to have a great time!

So get out there and be spontaneous. --- Lisa Wlodarski

Activity-A-Week: Go CrossFit!

CrossFit is not for the faint of heart or the out-of-shape (see me). I refer to it as the time I almost died. Okay, that's my dramatic low-impact exercise self talking - but let's not try to fool anyone here. CrossFit is hard.

It requires some serious boot camp moves all done under a ticking clock. You feel crazy when you're doing it - but afterwards...your muscles feel and look amazing. Think push-ups, thrusters, chin-ups and a 400 metre run done three times over.

CrossFit is efficient. The whole thing took about an hour, you'll burn a crapload of calories by combining strength training and cardio in competition with others on your team.

Each class starts with an orientation and warm-up before the trainer for your group walks you through the moves for the day. The routine changes daily so no one gets bored and you are pushed to challenge yourself.
My CrossFit teammate, Christina and our trainer, Jordan (above)
After practising our form for each move, we start the circuit three times over while timing ourselves and competing with each other. If you enjoy a little friendly competition, CrossFit will work for you.

I could barely finish two circuits that day and gave it my all - I think I would have to work up to three. The competition part can take anywhere from 20-30 minutes to complete from your one hour session.

Once everyone is done, we score our times on the whiteboard against others who have been there that day.

I can't say I loved CrossFit, but I can see why people are attracted to it. You get your workout done in an exciting and efficient way and you're pushing yourself hard.

Reebok has opened a dedicated CrossFit gym in Liberty Village that is open seven days a week. Beginners should look into signing up for a Foundations Class first to get well acquainted with the basics. This style of workout reminds me of Bodypump and it's taking North America by storm - it's worth a try at least. To learn more:

Book Review: Let's Pretend This Never Happened

Let's Pretend This Never Happened is the hilarious and mostly true memoir from Jenny Lawson - aka, The Bloggess.

If you're not familiar with The Bloggess, it's one of the BEST humour blogs out on the interwebz. Lawson has garnered a huge following of fans because of her illustrative storytelling skills and blatant profanity. She writes like we all think - full of curse words. Ok maybe that's just me. ANYHOW.

Lawson is not afraid to tell it like it is and showcases the humour in all the awkward situations that she ends up in. Like the time she tells a random group of strangers that she was once stabbed in the face by a serial killer (sort of true, but not really).
Her best anecdotes and 'this-can't-be-true' stories have been saved for this book, which has shot to #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List. Yes, some of it is gross-out funny - her Dad was a taxidermist and exposed her to all sorts of dead animals. Other times it's the exchanges between her and her husband Victor that leave me snickering.
We want to share this book with you! Comment below with your email address and could win your very own copy of Jenny Lawson's book. Contest is open to anyone who is available to come to Toronto to pick up their prize, as we are unable to ship.
Contest closes THIS Friday @ 9 PM. Thanks and good luck!

This week we chat with the fun and hilarious Tara Spencer-Nairn, who most of you must know from her role on Corner Gas as Karen on Dog River's police force. Tara talks to us about life as an actress and her favourite places in Toronto. Meet Tara!

How did you get into acting?

When I was in the 4th grade we made time capsules to open in the year 2000 and I actually kept mine. When I opened it I found a letter to myself that said if I wasn't an Olympic gymnast (clearly I am NOT), I would be an actress. I don't actually remember writing the letter, but I always knew that this was something I wanted to do. I didn't actually start acting until high school when a teacher was faced with figuring out something to do with this hyper, out-of-control kid so she tried putting me in a drama class. I haven't looked back since!

How did your role on Corner Gas change your life?

Corner Gas allowed me to grow so much as an actor and as a person. Six years is a long time to be on a series working with the same group of people, and I had the opportunity to spend that entire span with truly amazing artists and individuals. To maintain the quality of the show over the years took so much discipline from everyone involved, which was great training for an actor. To remember where I was in my life when the show started - which was a bit of a dark place - and to see the person I became at the end of the run was truly night and day. I really feel like I grew up on that set. The relationships and experiences I had on that show are so special and will be with me forever.

Tell us about your role on your latest show, The Listener!

I play the role of Sandy who is the head triage nurse at St. Luke's Hospital. She's a divorcee who can be a tad bitter at times and is often happiest when she's immersed in her work. Oh… and there's also a bit of a "will they, won't they" romantic relationship between Sandy and Oz (Ennis Esmer).

What is your typical day like?

Well, I'm the mother of a beautiful 8-month-old son so I no longer have the luxury of planning typical days! Every one is some variation of me running around like a bit of a mad woman juggling career and motherhood. It's great, I love it. It keeps me on my toes.

What would you tell your 20 year-old self?

I would tell my 20 year-old self that the party almost NEVER gets better after 2:00AM… so go home!

Where are your favourite places to hangout in Toronto?

I LOVE Leslieville!! Some of my faves are Swirl Wine Bar, The Roy, Goods and Provisions, Canard Mort, Queen Margherita Pizza… there are so many great restaurants there I could go on forever! I also love Bobbette and Belle (I admit to being a bit obsessed with their cupcakes), Te Aro Coffee and nothing's better on a summer evening than a lil' dark chocolate with chili gelato from Ed's Real Scoop.

What do you enjoy doing with your downtime?

I'm a bit of a gym junkie - I train at Think Fitness and EnergyXchange. I try to get there as much as I can but with my son in tow it gets a bit more difficult. I love spending as much time as possible with my family and friends, preferably on a patio or in my backyard with a glass of wine!

What life advice do you have for hip + urban girls out there trying to figure out what they want to do?

Don't get too stressed out trying to figure it all out, keep experimenting and the right thing will usually happen organically.

Website + Twitter?

I've been meaning to get a website for, oh… 10 years now! It'll happen eventually, I'm sure. For now it's just twitter @TSpencerNairn.

The Listener season premiere is TONIGHT, May 30th @ 10 PM (est) on CTV

Bandeau tops are back...or maybe they never left, but they're definitely everywhere this season. Though they look like a teensy bit of fabric best left for beach, they are totally wearable and can make any look 'of the moment' at a really affordable price point.

If you're on the fence about trying this barely there trend, rest assured, we've got you covered!

 6 Bandeaus To Love

And... if you're like me, and have no desire to bare it all, bandeaus are still for you. Pair your bandeau with high waisted bottoms and show just a pinch of skin or layer under a sheer ensemble or loose fit tank for coverage and contrast.

The Hug Summer Movie Guide!

Get the popcorn hot and ready because this is going to be a fun summer at the movies!

Known for the Twilight Series, Kristen Stewart stars in a darker and more mature version of Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman (opening June 1st). Instead of being told to run away by the Huntsman, he joins her in a battle against the Queen. This isn't your typical Snow White as a damsel in distress, she gets down to business using her sword! Look out for a wicked Charlize Theron too as the evil witch.
Lola Versus (opening July 8th) asks how do you handle being dumped three weeks before your wedding?  Starring indie darling Greta Gerwig, the film is about dealing with the pressures of being in your late 20’s and feeling like you have to have it all right away - the job, the guy, the condo—but sometimes the right guy is just around the corner.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone star in The Amazing Spiderman (opening July 3rd).  This time his love interest is Gwen Stacy, who was always competing with Mary Jane Watson in the comics. Spidey has to undertake Dr. Curt Connors, a.k.a. The Lizard. The film is in 3D, so it looks like it’ll be the adrenaline ride of the summer.
Anne Hathaway will take on Catwoman in the final part of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises (opening July 20th).  Seeing Hathaway, who played Jane Austen (Becoming Jane) as the woman with nine lives will be intriguing. The Dark Knight Rises maintains the gritty and brooding tone that added so much depth to the other Batman films as a whole. It’ll be interesting to see what conclusion Batman and Catwoman arrive at in terms of the inner conflict of being a hero.

So let's all go to the movies! Which films are you looking forward to this summer?

Travel Tips To Maximize Your Reward Points

A sponsored hip + urban girl post.

It has been a year and a half since American Express invited us to join them for a delicious three course meal – served in the grocery aisle at Whole Foods! At this dinner they unveiled their shiny new Gold Rewards Card.

I wasn’t sure what to expect and I actually didn't finish my meal because I was too engrossed in the conversation. They had me at "Travel Perks"!

I applied for the Card immediately when I got home, and about four weeks later, I was taking it out for a stroll around the neighbourhood and discovering just how easy it can be to turn my everyday spending into free roundtrip flights to anywhere in the world, retail and restaurant gift cards, unique experiences and MORE. With the Gold Rewards Card, grocery, drug store, gas and travel purchases EARN DOUBLE the Membership Rewards points – getting you from home to holiday that much quicker!

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Tokyo

Hello? Did someone say free flights to Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Thailand and Japan?

With the Gold Rewards Card, Lisa and I have been able to live out our jet-setting dreams on modest budgets.

Go to TWO places for the price of one!

You can book a round-trip (economy) to anywhere in Canada and Continental USA for 15,000 to 25,000 Aeroplan points. A total of 60,000 to 75,000 Aeroplan points gets you to Europe, and for 75,000 or more Aeroplan points, you will find yourself across the world in Asia, Australia or the Middle East.

Psssst... did you know you can travel to two destinations without spending extra points AND this Card even pays for those airport and fuel surcharge taxes we love to hate so much?

From eating Pad Thai in Koh Samui to slurping Ramen in Shibuya, here's how I do it...

1) Thanks to the ultimate flexibility of the Card, you can call Amex and ask to transfer your Membership Rewards points 1:1 for Aeroplan (and a wealth of other frequent flyer or frequent guest programs).

2) Go to Aeroplan.com to book your trip. Make sure you select "Multi-City" which lets you chose flights to 3 different places. (Example of my recent itinerary: Flight 1 from Toronto to Bangkok, Flight 2 from Bangkok to Tokyo, Flight 3 Tokyo to Toronto.)

3) The total cost was 75,000 Aeroplan points and $0 in taxes. Well, taxes were technically $154 but I used the TripFlex option that allows me to pay for any travel on my Card with points (including fees and taxes). After I received my statement, I just called Amex and had them use the rest of my Membership Rewards points to pay it off. (100 MR points = $1 CAD)

Ready to live the Gold Life?!

American Express would love to kick start the relationship with you on a high note, so apply now and get the $150 annual fee waived for the first year you have your Card. They also offer one free supplementary Card to help you earn points faster PLUS you get a welcome bonus of 15,000 Membership Rewards points which is basically a short-haul flight to say, The Big Apple!

So stop dreaming about your next travel destination, sign-up now and realize the potential!

He was your chauffeur, your little league coach, he chased away the monsters that lived under your bed and helped you make planet styrofoam balls for your science project. He told you that he would never break your heart - and has kept his promise after all these years. Here are just a few ways to say Thanks and let him know you will be Daddy's Little Girl forever.

Fatboy Bean Bag

Fatboy has reinvented the bean bag so this isn't your bro's ghetto college cushion! The large dimensions gives Dad plenty of room to sink into and completely drift away. With 16 colours to chose from, add a playful sense of whimsy to Dad's man cave. Fatboy also carries hammocks, parasols and other cool products. ($298)

For The Love Of Cake

Just when you thought cupcakes were dainty desserts for girls and kids, think again! Let Dad have his Mancakes and eat it! They come in flavours such as Stout Spice, Maple Bacon, Guinness Chocolate and Rum & Coke. ($2.50)

Coach For Men

Ladies love their Coach handbags but did you know Coach was actually founded in 1941 in NYC and got its start manufacturing small leather goods like baseball gloves?! Well if Dad is a sports nut, he'll adore the vintage baseball paperweight ($48), heritage baseball double billfold ($168) and other modern leather goods inspired by the sport that inspired this great company.

Smoker Box from Williams-Sonoma

So Dad's got grilling down to a T-bone steak. Give him a new challenge this summer with this smoker box. Fill with herbs or wood chips and it instantly turns any outdoor grill into a smoker, adding that fire-smoked flavor to chicken, burgers, seafood, veggies or tofu. Bet Dad can now easily convince you to come over for dinner more often. ($49)

Giant S'mores

Pickup this childhood favourite treat from Indigo Bookstore and relive the good old camping days with dad. He will appreciate the one-on-one quality time and may even tell you a spooky story around the campfire. ($30)

Toms Shoes

man Dad doesn't want anymore socks but he'll be the coolest kid on the block with a pair of Emerson Burlap Classics ($54) or Nautical Biminis (available in red, blue, beige or orange). For the super Rad Dad, get him a pair of Summer Plaids. He'll be pleased to know that your purchase means TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. Available at Little Burgundy. ($54+)

Conair i-Stubble Trimmer

Remind Dad that it is no longer Movember with this next generation trimmer from Conair. The motorized length control automatically adjusts the comb guide, giving Dad that perfect 5-o’clock shadow while the contouring head easily tracks the curves of his face for precision and reducing nicks. ($89)

Spas For Dads

Dads need pampering too so treat your Hipster Dad to some manly grooming at Garrison's - a rustic barber shop by the park or how about a soothing hot towel shave at Mankind Grooming for the Metro Dad? If Dad's been working extra hard lately, he will appreciate a head-to-toe pick me up at The Men's Power Spa (which includes a complimentary eyebrow wax and ear hair removal!) or gift him the Urban Warrior Package at Elmwood Spa.
